In an article published by FEBED, the Belgian Federation of Beer Distributors, Lazarus was highlighted as a promising initiative in the fight against binge drinking. The serious game prototype was developed by PreviewLabs for KU Leuven, in collaboration with AB InBev, the VAD (Flemish Expertise Centre for Alcohol and Other Drugs), and the Flemish Ministry of Education.
In Lazarus, players take on the role of someone attempting to function after a night of heavy drinking. The gameplay experience is deliberately impaired—simulating the effects of alcohol on cognition and motor control. As time progresses and the in-game blood alcohol level decreases, the player’s control over the character gradually returns to normal, effectively visualizing the recovery process.
The game was presented during Responsible Drinking Days and is currently being tested with students to explore its value as an educational tool. By using game technology to communicate a public health message in an interactive and relatable way, Lazarus shows the power of serious games to influence behavior.
