Study Explores Effectiveness of Smiling Instead of Smoking Prototype

A study conducted by our client Dr. Bettina Hoeppner, PhD, Associate Professor of Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, and a team of researchers tested the feasibility of the Smiling Instead of Smoking Prototype.  The second iteration of this prototype was used for this study, which was developed by PreviewLabs. This prospective study of 100 non-daily smokers concluded that Smiling Instead of Smoking “showed promising changes in constructs relevant to smoking cessation, and had high self-reported quit rates by non-daily smokers.”

Study Smiling Instead of Smoking

This study was conducted with the second iteration of the Smiling Instead of Smoking prototype, which was developed by PreviewLabs.

During this acceptability and feasibility study, participants were asked to use the Smiling Instead of Smoking Prototype to aid them in the process of quitting. The participants of the study were prescribed to use the app for 7 weeks. The app assigned them daily positive psychology exercises and gave them behavioral tasks that guided them through smoking cessation tools that are included in the app.

During the study, most participants actively used the Smiling Instead of Smoking app for an average of 24.7 days over the prescribed period. The vast majority (87%) indicated that the app helped them in their attempt to quit. 82% of the 95 participants claimed the app helped them to stay positive during this period.

As a result, the study concluded that the second iteration of Smiling Instead of Smoking can help non-daily smokers quit. However, the researchers indicated that a randomized controlled trial is needed to further test the efficacy of the app in helping smokers get off their unhealthy habit.
